Thomas J. McCarthy

President and Chief Executive Officer
Thomas J. McCarthy joined Monaghan, P.C. in 1994 and became Managing Director in 2001. Now president of the firm, Mr. McCarthy’s practice is focused on eminent domain (condemnation) matters and the representation of institutional, corporate, and individual clients in a wide variety of matters. He has expertise in ad valorem property tax appeals, real estate development, land use and financial transactions, and commercial litigation. Mr. McCarthy has tried and collected on a $1 million dollar verdict on behalf of his client. Mr. McCarthy has extensive facilitation and mediation experience, with a reputation of resolving the most dificult cases. He is experienced in litigating a variety of eminent domain issues, including necessity challenges and project issues, in Michigan trial and appellate courts. He regularly represents property owners and public entities in condemnation and taxation cases, including residential, office, retail, commercial, and industrial properties. He also serves as University Counsel for a private Michigan university.

Thomas McCarthy has been selected as a Super Lawyer in Michigan Super Lawyers magazine every year since 2008 for his expertise in eminent domain and is recognized as a subject matter expert on public infrastructure land acquisition matters. He as obtained the Martindale Hubbell AV Preeminent® rating.

Prior to joining the Monaghan firm, Mr. McCarthy was a commercial litigator in private practice from 1985-1987. From 1987 to 1993, he was Director of Special Projects for the County of Wayne and was lead condemnation trial counsel for Wayne County’s acquisition of private property for the expansion of the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) in the 1990s.
